“THE WATER OF APHRODITE”
GIROLAMO CIULLA'S FOUNTAIN FOR
THE CITY OF PIETRASANTA

"Aphrodite's water", based on a sketch made in 1994, is an 8-metre-wide fountain that represents Aphrodite as she emerges on the edge of the water, hieratic, immersed in an ecstasy of life: that's the moment in which she catches her the sculptural vision of Girolamo Ciulla.

The goddess of beauty, of love, of generation, was mysteriously born from the foam of the sea and began her journey in the myth. Carved in travertine, she emerges from the waters protecting and paying homage to the creative vivacity typical of the Pietrasanta people, skilled sculptors and craftsmen, scientists and great poets.

Of Sicilian origins - whose myths resonate like echoes in his sculpture - Ciulla decided to settle in this Tuscan town, directly "at the sources of marble".

With the positioning of the imposing travertine sculpture-fountain created in the Little Athens workshops by the Sicilian master, the new function of this space takes shape as a center of aggregation and sociality.

The work symbolizes not only an excellent example of the sculptor's poetics, but as often happens, art is a tool for urban redevelopment.
